Shantanu Debnath

Shantanu Debnath is a graduate student in Chris Monroe's trapped ion quantum information group. He earned an undergraduate degree in engineering physics from the Indian Institute of Technology-Mumbai and afterward briefly studied the correlations that arise in 3- and 4-qubit entangled quantum states. As a PhD student at JQI, he has helped develop a 5-qubit trapped ion quantum computer that a user can program with any sequence of logic gates. This software-defined connectivity of many qubits opens up the possibility of executing large-scale quantum algorithms and simulations.
Zachary Eldredge

Zachary Eldredge, a PhD student at JQI and QuICS, received undergraduate degrees in physics and mathematics from the University of Oklahoma. At JQI, he has studied the emergence of a self-organized structure in atoms near a nanofiber, working closely with Luis Orozco’s to investigate nanofiber platforms and cold atom physics. Now, he works with Alexey Gorshkov and studies the physics of long-range quantum information and quantum networks.
David Hucul

David Hucul is a graduate student in Professor Chris Monroe's trapped ion quantum information lab at the Joint Quantum Institute. He earned undergraduate degrees in physics and chemistry in 2006 from the University of Michigan and a master's degree at MIT in 2009 under Wolfgang Ketterle. David started his PhD work with Chris Monroe in 2009 working on using frequency combs to entangle trapped ions. He now works on entangling trapped atoms within and between ion traps using both phonons and photons to create quantum networks. He expects to finish his graduate studies sometime in 2015 and hopes to find a postdoctoral position after that.
Aaron Lee

Aaron Lee, a JQI graduate student, received his undergraduate degree in physics at UMD. He worked with Chris Monroe’s trapped ion group, using ytterbium ions to simulate other quantum systems. As a graduate student, he has continued to study quantum information with the Monroe group and hopes his work can contribute to eventually building a quantum computer.
Crystal Senko

Crystal Senko was a graduate student in Chris Monroe's ion trapping group. While in the group she focused on ultrafast spin manipulation as well as quantum simulation of magnetism. She is now a postdoctoral researcher with Mikhail Lukin at Harvard. Senko is an undergraduate alumni of Duke University, where she worked with Dan Gauthier on magneto-optical trapping using distributed feedback lasers.
Xiaopeng Li

Xiapeng Li is a JQI Postdoctoral Fellow working in CMTC. His research interest is primarily in quantum condensed matter. His work covers novel states of matter in both well-controlled ultracold atomic systems and in complex electronic materials. He has been have been studying a broad range of systems, such as atomic p-orbital systems in optical lattices, dipolar quantum gases, and complex oxides. Some of his current efforts focus on (1) emergent spin orbital couplings and gauge fields in spinor Bose gases and Bose-Fermi mixtures as well as (2) band crossing and multi-orbital superconductivity, spin spirals and skyrmions in oxides and heterostructures. Li received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and was an undergraduate at the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui, China.
