March Meeting 2012 will be held in Boston, Massachusetts from Feb. 27-Mar. 2. This is the largest physics meeting in the world. Many from JQI will attend, giving a total of 30 research presentations, which primarily focus on quantum aspects of condensed matter research. JQI Fellow and Nobel Laureate Bill Phillips will give a talk titled “Ultracold, trapped atomic gases as material systems,” during the Kavli Foundation Special Session on “Emergent Physics at the Mesoscale.” 

NRC Postdoctoral Fellow Steven Olmschenk will be joining the faculty at Denison University in August, 2012. Steve was a graduate student in Chris Monroe’s Trapped Ion Quantum Information group. For the last few years he has been a postdoc in the NIST Laser Cooling and Trapping Group. While at NIST he has worked on Trey Porto’s double-well optical lattice experiment. Upon moving to Dension he plans to build an ion trapping experiment.

Four Fellows of the Joint Quantum Institute were recognized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Department of Commerce in the 2011 annual awards ceremonies.

Three researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will receive the 2010 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the White House announced on Monday, Sept. 26, 2011. PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent research careers.
