Symmetries and dynamics in a quantum-chaotic system: Engineering Hamiltonians and symmetries

Symmetries play a central hole in Physics and in particular in quantum-chaotic systems, where they provide a useful classification. In this talk, I will show how a simple cold-atom system, the atomic kicked rotor, allows flexible Hamiltonian engineering with a full control of time-reversal and parity symmetries. Symmetry break can be experimentally observed thanks to quantum-interference phenomena like enhanced return to the origin, forward and backward coherent scattering in momentum space. This allows one to quantitatively explore the so-called "weak localization regime", a precursor to the Anderson localization.
