NIST Colloquium- We Have No Idea
[Affiliates of the Joint Quantum Institute are invited to attend this special NIST Colloquium. For a gate pass, please email firstname.lastname@example.org by noon, Tuesday, September 19, stating name, citizenship and U.S. Permanent Resident status (if applicable). Non-US citizens will need to provide supplementary information in a followup e-mail.]
This colloquium features two speakers: Jorge Cham, creator of PhD Comics, will be live sketching during a talk featuring UC Irvine Physics Professor Daniel Whiteson. Cham and Whiteson are stopping by NIST on their fall tour featuring their book We Have No Idea. The book is filled with infographics, cartoons, and entertaining explanations of complex physics concepts surrounding our understanding of the universe. Cham is a roboticist by training, with a PhD in mechanical engineering from Stanford University. While at Stanford, he started Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD) Comics, his popular comic strip and website featuring the (comical) experiences of graduate students. We Have No Idea has been featured in many media outlets including Popular Science and Nature.
NOTE: please be aware of the special time and Gaithersburg location (the red auditorium) for this first colloquium. Gaithersburg staff are encouraged to bring their own visitors, and hardcover copies of We Have No Idea will be for sale by a local bookseller starting at 12:30 pm, outside of the Red Auditorium ($28 payable by cash, credit, or check with ID). Cham and Whiteson will sign books following their talk.
