Some experiments with optical nanofibers

Nanophotonic devices form a versatile platform to enhance atom-light interactions. We will present a method of making a "nanophotonic" device by paring down a normal optical fiber to sub-wavelength diameter. The high transmission of these nanofibers allows for optical trapping of atoms and potential integration with superconducting circuits. We will also show how time-correlated, single-photon counting can reveal both the motion of cold atoms near the fiber and how the proximity of the nanofiber modifies the atomic spontaneous decay rate.
