Emergent Phenomena in Quantum Materials: Seeking Majorana Fermions

Quantum materials allow us to access exotic ground states of electrons in condensed matters systems. Of topical interest are Majorana fermions, a particle that is its own antiparticle that may exist in nature. Exploration emulations of these particles in the solid state would be of fundamental interest and have the possibility of being used in quantum computation. In this talk I will review some recipes to create these particles and discuss the current experimental challenges for their realization.
