From atomic Rydberg reservoirs for polar molecules to quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories with cold atoms

April 16, 2012 - 12:30pm
Speaker:
Peter Zoller
Institution:
Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Innsbruck, and Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Innsbruck, Austria

I will discuss two topics of ongoing research on cold atoms and molecules in Innsbruck. In the first part of my talk I will discuss laser dressed dipolar and Van der Waals interactions between atoms and polar molecules, so that a cold atomic gas with laser admixed Rydberg levels acts as an engineered reservoir for both elastic and inelastic collisional processes. In the second part I will present ongoing work on quantum simulation of dynamical gauge fields with cold atoms within so-called quantum link models.
